It's always fun to see how much of your musical interest you can push on to mom and dad. Every year when I go back to the states, I try to hook up my parents with some tunes. It's always fun to return and see what sticks. With Mom, I've definitely discovered a bit of a pattern. You have to hit her with the folkies... A little Caitlin Cary, a dash of Alison Krauss, a smattering of Nickel Creek and definitely some Ryan Adams. Dad is a bit more difficult... He used to manage a Musicland in Minneapolis back in the day, so he definitely has the background. Dad introduced me to some great music, and even bought me my first copy of Exile in Guyville*, however, he sometimes heads into dangerous waters. Consider his latest purchase, 12 Girls Band. My mom has nearly considered jumping from a moving vehicle when it is in the stacker. However, he pulls out some good stuff as well, consider Christmas 2003, when I was picked up from the airport, and he excitedly played me Chutes too Narrow, and I told him that I had been listening to it on repeat in the Airplane (my ipod worked then). He definitely has warmed up to The Postal Service, but I also caught him listening to Billy Joel's greatest hits, and I don't think he was in it for the irony. In my recent visit, however, I was able to kill two birds with one stone. It seems that along with Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, even Mom and Dad want to Feel the Illinoise!

*Dad never actually liked Liz Phair, he bought the album after reading a good review, and passed it on to me... He also never got me to like Stone Flute, sorry Dad. According to Stereogum, Liz Phair has recorded a new album that is supposedly less Avril and more Guyville, let's cross our fingers.

**See CMJ for a great interview with current Indie Yuppie darling, Sufjan Stevens.
