A Boy Named Seppo

I can't believe that I can convince my social set to follow me out to see bands they have never heard of, I really am a lucky man. Last night was the Keane/Snow Patrol show at the Gaelic Club in Surry Hills. I have never been to this venue, and found it to be crap. I am getting old, and I like to watch bands, not be shoved around by screaming Irish men and women. I have been trying to listen to Keane and have found them about as exciting as Nickelback. I thought with some of the praise, I had heard, that I might find something to like in the live show. NOPE! It was boring and contrived, and the piano players bouncing head continues to haunt me.

Snow Patrol started off a bit rough, but ended the show well enough. The last few songs were very enjoyable, and I have to admit I couldn't help sing shouting "Light up, light up, as if you had a choice" along with the audience. I sadly left my lighter at home.

I just found out that the late Shel Silverstein wrote "A Boy Named Sue", recorded by the late Johnny Cash. I have always assumed that it was written by the Man in Black himself. My first grade teacher was obsessed with Mr. Silverstein, and would always read us poems from "The Light in the Attic" and "Where the Sidewalk Ends." I once converted a cardboard box into a giant "Homework Machine" to reenact the poem of the same title.

The Homework Machine, oh the Homework Machine,
Most perfect contraption that's ever been seen.
Just put in your homework, then drop in a dime,
Snap on the switch, and in ten seconds' time,
Your homework comes out, quick and clean as can be.
Here it is--"nine plus four?" and the answer is "three."
Three?
Oh me . . .
I guess it's not as perfect
As I thought it would be.

Speaking of late and great, I know I'm a little bit late on this, but I found this great article that Truman Capote wrote on Marlon Brando back in 1957, called, "The Duke in his Domain." Brando says,

"A sensitive person receives fify impressions where somebody else may only get seven. Sensitive people are so vulnerable; they're so easily brutalized and hurt just because they are sensitive."
